Crime

In 2020, thanks to research, we can be sure that Michigan is in the top 20 safest

states in the U.S., with 12 low property crimes per 100.000 residents and 37 violent

crimes in 100.000 residents. Even though this might seem well, 41% of Michigan residents worry about crime daily in 2020, compared to 45% in 2019. In Michigan, there are three types of crimes: violent crime, property crime, and mass shootings. 4% of residents have experienced violent crime in the last 12 months, 19% have experienced property crime in the past 12 months, and 3% have been affected by mass shootings.

Violent crime

Michigan worries most about being physically assaulted by a stranger, but they feel

that getting murdered is more likely to happen. 37% are most afraid of being

physically (40% nationwide), 23% think that murder by a stranger is a crime that is

most likely to happen, even though murder was the least common crime in Michigan. There were just three murders reported among the safest cities, making up 2% of all the violent crimes reported by those cities.

Poverty crime

The most concerning property crime in Michigan is someone breaking in when

residents aren’t at home. People also think this is the poverty crime that is most

likely to happen. 61% of Michigan residents are most concerned about a home

break-in when they’re away, and 33% of Michigan residents believe they’re most

likely to experience a break-in when they’re away. 17% of people in Michigan

have a security system to protect their homes (24% nationwide), 26% of people use

a dog or any guard animal (33% nationwide), and 28% use no form of protection or

security (29% nationwide).

Mass shootings

Mass shootings are the worst because they have the most victims. There have been

four mass shootings in Michigan:

1. Murray-Wright High School shooting in 1985, where seven people got

injured during a football match (6 of them were teenagers)

2. Grand Rapids mass murder in 2011, where a gunman killed seven people and

wounded two others

3. Kalamazoo shootings in 2016, where six people got killed, two were injured

4. St. Joseph courthouse shooting in 2016, where two people got killed, one

was injured

Overall crime in Michigan was increasing in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, and then

started decreasing since then. In 2018, there were 210.198 crimes (44.918 violent

crimes, 165.280 property crimes, and 551 murders).

Michigan has had its share of notorious killers throughout history, and there are

some of the most famous ones: Paul Jaworski, John Eric Armstrong, Elias

Abuelazam (Flint Serial Killer or The Serial Slasher), John Norman Collins, AKA

Ypsilanti Ripper or Co-Ed Killer, Christopher James Dankovich, Juwan Knumar

Deering, Stephen Christopher Grant, Andrew Kehoe, AKA The Bath School

Murder, Robert Bashara, AKA Big Bob)
